Program

Lunch address - China and India: Moving to the Frontier
John Sutton, Sir John Hicks Professor of Economics in the Economics Department at the London School of Economics

Panel I - Financial market regulation
How can regulators keep financial markets stable, and maintain public support for allocating and using capital efficiently, without stifling innovation? What would better regulation mean for financial intermediaries, and for companies trying to raise capital?

Discussants:

  • Andrew G. Haldane, Head of Risk Assessment at the Bank of England
  • Richard Portes, Professor of Economics, London Business School
  • Emmanual Roman, Co-CEO, GLG Partners LP

Moderated by Brian Barry, Clinical Associate Professor of Economics, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business

Panel II - Doing business in a global environment Information moves quickly around the world, complicating companies' interactions with disparate pressure groups. Global business leaders struggle to safeguard their reputations with consumers and workers; respond to criticism from NGOs; react to media coverage; protect their intellectual property; and adapt themselves to local rules that are often overseen by weak governments. How can they best deal with these competing demands, and with public antipathy towards trade and global investment, without sacrificing the obvious need to make sensible business decisions?

Discussants:

  • Matthew Gentzkow, Assistant Professor of Economics and the John Huizinga Faculty Fellow, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business
  • Peter Lacy, Strategic Advisor and Non-Executive Director, European Academy of Business in Society
  • Silvana Tenreyro, Lecturer, London School of Economics

Moderated by Brian Barry, Clinical Associate Professor of Economics, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business
