Price Theory Scholars Program

The Becker Center on Chicago Price Theory, founded by Richard O. Ryan, MBA ’66 established the Scholars Program with the support of the Searle Freedom Trust to give promising economics PhD students the opportunity to study price theory at the University of Chicago. The goal of the program is to expose students in the early stages of independent research to price theory in the Chicago tradition, which emphasizes the application of simple economic principles to important real-world problems.

The idea for the Scholars Program grew out of Jesse Shapiro’s visit to the University of Chicago in the fall of 2002, during which he participated in the Becker-Murphy price theory class. His exposure to the Chicago environment, and to price theory class in particular, gave Jesse a new perspective on economics that he took back with him to Harvard, where he finished his degree. After obtaining his PhD, Jesse became the inaugural Becker Fellow. His research agenda continues to reflect the impact of the price theory tradition at Chicago Booth, where he is now a member of the faculty.
